Choose Your Gear

Explain the ten systems as functions, not a rigid shopping list, and adapt them to trip, location, conditions, and personal needs.

Compare fit, terrain, weather, load, personal comfort, and support preferences; there is no universally correct footwear type.

A gradual familiar-route test helps reveal fit, pressure, and sock issues before committing to a longer outing.

Fit, seam placement, moisture, shoe volume, and individual comfort matter more than a universal fiber prescription.

Choose capacity from the gear and trip, then assess access, comfort, adjustability, and fit with a realistic load.

Explain torso and hip-belt fit as a process to test in person; sizing varies by model and body shape.

Balance stable load placement with quick access to navigation, layers, water, and emergency items; keep critical gear reachable.

Balance expected conditions, fit over layers, ventilation, durability, and packability; verify weather rather than rely on a forecast promise.

Prioritize essential functions, use what fits and works, borrow or rent where available, and buy gradually after learning needs.
